IN REPLY REFER TO:

The Honorable Michael A. Dorame

Dear Chairman Dorame:

We
have been informed by Mr. Andrew Remus, Project Coordinator, Inyo
County Yucca Mountain Repository Assessment Office, that the Inyo
County Board of Supervisors has approved the expenditure of a
considerable level of funding to support the construction of a well in
the Furnace Creek area of Death Valley National Park. The approved
funds will provide for several activities associated with the
construction for the wells and will cover costs that would otherwise be
borne by the National Park Service or one of the other allied
organizations here at Furnace Creek.
We wish to extend to the
Board and the people of Inyo County the gratitude of the National Park
Service for their valuable assistance and support. This project will
result in the acquisition of information essential to our understanding
of the hydrogeology of Death Valley, and is important to our joint
efforts to protect the water resources of the park and of the county.
We
would like to take this opportunity to further recognize and thank the
county for its extensive efforts in this area. We have been most
gratified with the cooperation and assistance provide by Andrew Remus
and the county's hydrology consultant, Mr. Mike King. The work they
have performed on behalf of the county during the past several years
has considerably augmented our knowledge and expanded our databases
related to the hydrology of the area.
That information is
important to the National Park Service and to the ongoing multi-agency
research studies on the Death Valley Regional Ground Water Aquifer
System. The county's contributions to what may constitute the most
extensive scientific undertaking of its kind are significant.
We
are particularly pleased with the work done by Andrew and Mike in
hosting the Annual Devils Hole Workshop this year. They should both be
recognized for the effort they made to insure an effective,
informative, and enjoyable conference. Again, please accept our
gratitude for the work and assistance Inyo County is providing in these
efforts.
Sincerely,
Richard H. Martin
